About Me
My name is Steve Wittenberg, and I am a photographer/visual artist and media producer with a rich history in both creative and commercial ventures.
Early Beginnings
My journey in photography and media production began in 1977, while I completed my studies at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Growing up on an island in the Mississippi River, on the borders of a National Wildlife Refuge, I lived a Huck Finn-style boyhood that deeply influenced my artistic vision. The natural beauty and serene environment of my childhood have always been a source of inspiration in my work.
Professional Journey
My initial published work garnered recognition and led to a job offer at the La Crosse Tribune, the local daily newspaper in La Crosse, Wisconsin. This experience laid the foundation for my career in media. Subsequently, I took on the role of publisher and General Manager of the La Crosse Area Visitor, a monthly magazine focused on events, activities, and guides for the region.

Expanding Horizons
Seeking further education and new opportunities, I moved to Utah for postgraduate studies. During my time in Utah, I served as an in-house creative for several prestigious outdoor retail companies in Salt Lake City and Park City. My work expanded to include publications by local print media and fine art sales, with representation in regional shows and galleries. A highlight of this period was a triptych commission to commemorate the opening of the “Utah Artist Hands” gallery in 2001, just before the Winter Olympics.
A Turning Point
The events of September 11, 2001, marked a significant change in my life. Surviving the attacks in New York City had a profound impact on me, and some of my street photography from that day has been shown and recognized internationally. Shortly after this life-altering experience, I founded MeanPony Productions, a digital media studio dedicated to live music photography and digital media production/management. We serve a vibrant network of musicians, artists, publicists, and cultural event producers throughout Southeastern Appalachia & the Intermountain West.

Current Work
Over the past several years, I’ve dedicated myself to building a substantial inventory of collectible fine art. My work, which includes local landscapes and abstract pieces, captures the beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the many scenic back roads of North & South Carolina. As our collectible fine art becomes more widely known, I continue to explore and document the stunning vistas and hidden gems of this region.
Thank you for visiting my website. I invite you to explore my site and discover the stories behind each piece of art.
