Setting up Digital Broadcast Print E-mail
(Park City, Utah, USA) 12.15.09 MeanPony Productions has recently set up a beta digital broadcasting studio. Primarily with the "Ustream" ® online broadcasting service. We've also tested "Live" by for integration directly with a Facebook profile page. So far, we've settled on the "Ustream" &reg option. The broadcast has an advert strip across the bottom that can be x'ed out, but is no more obtrusive than other free streams. The compression is very high, so resultant image quality is low, but acceptable. There are some solutions for a Windows environment (Mac Boot camp??) that may give higher quality video image.

More to follow with details of our experience. Follow this link to our current "occasionally" live webcast; an embedded object in a previous MeanPony blog post. When the page loads, click the smaller "play" icon at the bottom of viewer (rather than the large "play" icon which typically will take you to the Ustream site) Use guest password: meanpony

Here's the basic 2 cam setup for our Mac environment:
Set up for Windows environment is similar & there are few different choices for software. Goal here is to create a live webcast with minimum 2 cameras, ability to build shots with f/x in a preview mode while simultaneously broadcasting the live shot; add audio both from internal mic and various media players. Planning to add simple USB audio mixer ($50-$100) for higher quality audio production. All this for a minimal $ investment in hardware/software beyond a capable laptop/desktop, most will already have on hand. Possible to have a dedicated mini dv studio for a couple of thousand $ or so in hardware and/or hire basic event broadcasts/crew for $200 -$500 per location.

A. Hardware
1.) MacBook Pro w/ built in iSight cam & mic
   2.) Mac TimeCapsule wifi
   3.) Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000
   4.) Broadband internet modem/connection (Motorola/Comcast)
5.) planned additions: USB Audio Mixer/external mic
6.) planned additions: DV /firewire/wireless cams

B. Software
1.) OSX 10.5.8 w/ iTunes, Audio MIDI Setup
2.) Firefox/Safari (or capable browser of choice)
3.) Adobe ® Flash Player 10 plugin for browser (Free)
   4.) Ustream account (Free)
5.) iUSBcam to enable the Logitech cam (Shareware $9.95)
   6.) iGlasses plugin for browser/apps (Shareware $9.95)
   7.) Camtwist Studio v.2.1 (Freeware)
   8.) Soundflowerbed v1.4.4 (Freeware)
   9.) audio-scrobbler/player & account (Free internet radio/music community)
