Patagonia Opens 25th Store in Austin

Schweitzer Goes Green

Idaho’s Schweitzer Mountain Resort recently announced several initiatives to reduce its impact on the environment, including hiring an environmental coordinator, signing the National Ski Area Association’s Sustainable Slopes Initiative, purchasing wind energy to operate chairlifts, enlisting an environmental committee to work on resort improvements, and hosting a contest to see how much energy the resort could save last summer. -
Adventurer to Row for Disabled Vets

Fresh off a two-year, 75,000-mile around-the-world fishing expedition, that’s what adventurer Dan Cook will be doing this spring when he embarks on a solo rowing trip spanning more than 3,700 miles from Montana to the mouth of the Mississippi. The journey will commence April 1, 2009, and help raise awareness and funding for disabled veterans across America. -

Waterville Valley Celebrates 40 Years

What makes a resort an icon? Try a 40th anniversary, which is what New Hampshire’s Waterville Valley is celebrating this year. In the mid-‘60s, Olympic skier Tom Corcoran scoured northern New England for just the right mountain to fulfill his vision of a year-round destination ski resort. When he saw Waterville Valley—which then had only a couple of rope tows and trails, an inn, and 500 acres of land for sale—Tom knew it was the place.
